James among scores of others closer to homeownership

Carolina James could not contain her joy as she is now one step closer to owning her own home. James is one of many residents at Block 3 Great Diamond who are now closer to achieving homeownership.

On Wednesday, the Ministry of Housing and Water hosted a lot identification event, where newly allocated residents were able to mark a significant milestone. For some, this moment means finally saying goodbye to paying rent for a house that isn’t theirs.

“No more renting!” James exclaimed, overwhelmed with joy as she moves closer to leaving behind years of paying expensive rent and approaching the prospect of paying a mortgage for her dream home. For James, this is a huge relief, and she expressed her gratitude to the government for looking after her welfare.

Patrice Sudarson, another allotee, shared similar sentiments, saying that her allocation marked the beginning of a new era, not only for her but also for her children. After waiting for 10 years, she is now able to provide a secure home for them.

While many may see the idea of owning a home as ordinary, for these families, it represents a significant milestone. It gives them a sense of accomplishment, knowing they no longer have to pay rent and can now direct their funds toward homeownership.

This lot distribution is part of the ministry’s commitment to delivering 50,000 house lots by the end of 2025. It comes less than a week after the ministry’s visit to Linden, where issues like squatting and illegal land acquisition were addressed.

The Minister of Housing and Water plans to distribute 400 more house lots by July, bringing the ministry closer to reaching its 2025 allocation goal.
