The Ethnic Relations Commission (ERC) has launched an investigation into remarks made by WPA leader Dr David Hinds on his online show, aired last Monday.
During the broadcast, Dr Hinds referred to some Afro-Guyanese as “lick bottom Africans,” “house slaves,” “slave catchers,” and “sellouts.”
His comments drew strong condemnation, including from President Dr Irfaan Ali and the opposition party, A New and United Guyana.
Dr Hinds, who is no stranger to controversy, had in 2021 criticised Afro-Guyanese for buying ‘black pudding’ from an Indo-Guyanese woman at Mon Repos Market.
At that time, Dr Hinds claimed that on seeing the customers, “I almost fell down dead.”
In a statement issued today, the ERC confirmed that it is scrutinising the comments, which are believed to have the potential to create division and disrupt social harmony in Guyana.
The Commission emphasised its commitment to promoting respect and unity among all ethnic groups, noting that a thorough review of the broadcast is underway.
The ERC assured the public that it is treating the matter with urgency and seriousness.
“Once the investigation is concluded, the Commission will make public its findings and any actions deemed necessary to uphold the principles of fairness, unity, and respect,” the statement read.
The ERC also called on all Guyanese, especially public figures and content creators, to exercise responsibility in their communication, urging that public discourse remain constructive and avoid contributing to racial discord.
The Commission reaffirmed its dedication to fostering a society where mutual respect and social harmony prevail.
