Guyana and the Dominican Republic are set to strengthen their partnership in the tourism sector, aiming to market a shared premium tourism destination.

President Dr Mohamed Irfaan Ali announced this commitment following discussions with Dominican Republic President Luis Abinader on Tuesday.

The collaboration seeks to leverage the unique offerings of both countries to create a dynamic and attractive tourism package.

“I was very pleased with our discussion with the President of the Dominican Republic, who made it very clear that he is ready to market jointly Guyana and the DR as a common destination that is just two and a half hours apart,” President Ali stated.

This strategic alliance, supported by private sector ventures, is expected to significantly enhance Guyana’s evolving tourism and hospitality industry.

Last year’s launch of direct flights between the two nations by Sky High Aviation Services Dominicana has already begun unlocking new business and tourism opportunities.

President Ali shared these insights during the sod-turning ceremony for the new independent branded hotel at the Pegasus Hotel and Corporate Centre in Kingston, Georgetown.

This modern facility, set to provide world-class accommodations and services, will join a growing list of luxury hotels currently under development across Guyana.

Highlighting the government’s proactive approach, the President emphasised capitalising on Guyana’s rich biodiversity and serene landscapes, positioning these natural assets as prime tourism products.

“We have to look at how we leverage the diaspora to bring back their capital and to make Guyana their destination. To do this, we must work with the best brands and names globally. We are actively engaging top investors in the eco and nature-based tourism sectors to bring world-class experiences to Guyana,” he noted.

The administration’s ambitious plan aims to attract three million visitors by 2030, a goal that requires building a diverse calendar of events to appeal to a broad spectrum of tourists.

This includes partnering with leading figures in sports and entertainment to create an enticing and sustainable tourism structure.

The new Pegasus development symbolises this transition, serving as a bridge between the country’s storied past and its vibrant, innovative future.

A section of the Pegasus Poolside and Grand Savannah Suite will be replaced to accommodate the state-of-the-art hotel, reflecting Guyana’s bold commitment to enhancing its hospitality landscape. (Rewritten from a DPI release)
