Retired Assistant Police Commissioner Paul Slowe is expected to appear at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court next Wednesday to answer a charge related to the unlawful release of the identity of the female involved in his ongoing sexual assault case.
A police statement on Thursday said that Slowe had been under investigation for reportedly disclosing the name of the sexual assault complainant during a Facebook programme.
The statement added that upon completion of the investigation, the police case file was sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions, who returned the document with advice to institute a criminal charge related to the alleged breach of the victim’s identity.
Slowe, in 2021, was charged with three counts of sexual assault allegedly committed on a female. The new charges stem from this case.
Slowe was expected to be charged with the breach of identity offence today, but no case had been filed at the court.
Slowe’s attorney, Dexter Todd, told the media that there had been no case file available against his client when he appeared at the court. Todd also stated that his client was unaware that a new charge had been instituted against him, as he had received no correspondence from the police regarding the matter and had only learned about the identity breach through media reports.
Nevertheless, Slowe attended court today for the continuation of the substantive sexual assault case before Magistrate Fabio Azore.
After the adjournment of the sexual assault case, Slowe, along with his attorney, went to the Brickdam Police Station to clarify the new charge against him.
It was there, Todd said, that the charge of breaching the victim’s identity was read to his client. Slowe has denied the allegation.
Slowe is being charged under Section 62(3) of the Sexual Offences Act, Chapter 8:03, which protects the identities of individuals reporting sexual offences.
Slowe will return to court on March 7 for the continuation of the sexual assault case.
