Guyana National Bureau of Standards (GNBS) Executive Director, Trevor Bassoo, has emphasised the growing recognition among businesses and organisations of the importance of adopting proper standards to enhance quality output and build customer loyalty.
He made this statement during the launch of the fifth National Quality Awards (NQA) to recognise businesses that excel in meeting quality standards.
The ceremony took place at the GNBS office at the National Exhibition Centre in Sophia, Greater Georgetown.
“We support businesses that are committed to adopting standards that improve their processes, products, and services,” Bassoo remarked.
The NQA aims not only to recognise excellence but also to highlight the dedication of businesses to quality standards, which is crucial for long-term success in today’s competitive market.
Bassoo further noted that businesses participating in the NQA will benefit from the opportunity to have their operations evaluated by an independent third-party assessor at an affordable cost.
This evaluation will help businesses identify areas for improvement and refine their business procedures.
Since its inception in 2017, the NQA has grown significantly, with 18 participants in its first year.
The event, hosted biennially, saw a remarkable increase in participation, with 35 businesses in 2021 and 61 businesses in 2023.
The programme was further strengthened in 2021 with the introduction of new award categories, including environmental sustainability, safety, and other critical areas, broadening the scope for diverse sectors to participate.
The award criteria are based on international management principles, with a strong emphasis on customer-focused businesses that demonstrate excellence in leadership, process management, continuous improvement, and relationship management.
The GNBS is calling on eligible businesses from various sectors—including manufacturing, small enterprises, services, financial institutions, and tourism—to submit their applications by the deadline of 31 March. The awards ceremony is scheduled for October.
The NQA serves as a valuable opportunity for businesses to showcase their commitment to quality, positioning themselves as leaders in their respective industries and reinforcing their reputation with loyal clients.
