Police are investigating a fatal accident involving a pedestrian that occurred at approximately 11:11 hours today on the Bagotstown Public Road, East Bank Demerara (EBD).
The accident involved a motor lorry owned by Toolsie Persaud Limited and driven by 59-year-old Wayne McBean, a resident of Kaneville, EBD. The pedestrian, a male of Indian descent (name, age, and address unknown at this time), was struck by the vehicle.
Enquiries revealed that the lorry was traveling south along the eastern driving lane of Bagotstown Public Road when the pedestrian attempted to cross from east to west into the path of the lorry, resulting in a collision. As a result, both of the pedestrian’s legs were crushed.
The driver, along with public-spirited citizens, lifted the injured pedestrian and placed him into a pickup truck in a conscious state. They escorted him to the Diamond Diagnostic Centre, accompanied by a police officer.
At the center, he was examined by a doctor and pronounced dead on arrival. His body was then transported to Memorial Gardens Funeral Home for cold storage, pending identification and a post-mortem examination with dissection.
Efforts to locate eyewitnesses led to one individual coming forward, and a written statement was taken. A Notice of Intended Prosecution was issued to the lorry driver.
Further investigations are ongoing.
