The Ministry of Labour has officially launched the Skills Connect app, a digital platform aimed at connecting job seekers with employment opportunities and enabling service providers to advertise their skills and businesses.
The launch event was held on Tuesday at the Ministry of Labour boardroom and was attended by several key officials, including Labour Minister Joseph Hamilton, Chief Labour Officer Dhaneshwar Deonarine, and Chief Recruitment and Manpower Officer Yolanda Grant, among others.
According to the Chief Labour Officer, the Skills Connect app is an enhancement to the ministry’s online job bank rather than a replacement. He emphasised that the platform was designed to facilitate accessibility for workers across the country, allowing them to connect, collaborate, and build trusted relationships regardless of location.
The app primarily targets blue-collar workers—whether unskilled, semi-skilled, or skilled—helping them access job opportunities and market their services with ease.
Minister Hamilton highlighted the broader impact of the initiative.
“It’s another initiative by the government to get people closer to jobs and jobs closer to the people. While the job bank dealt with potential employees and companies’ skills, the Connect is wider, whereby you can have one-on-one engagement.” He noted that the app would play a crucial role in bridging the country’s internal skills gap.
In addition to being a free service, the Skills Connect app includes a translation feature that supports Spanish, making it more accessible to a diverse range of users. The application is compatible with all smart devices and allows users to provide feedback.
The Ministry of Labour is encouraging all job seekers, skilled workers, and employers to download and utilise the Skills Connect app, emphasising its role as a valuable tool in facilitating employment and economic growth in Guyana.
