Traffic Chief to motorists: utilise diversions to ease traffic congestion

Traffic Chief and Assistant Commissioner of Police, Mahendra Singh, is encouraging motorists to utilise the diversions on the East Coast of Demerara to ease traffic congestion in light of ongoing road construction.

In an interview on Radio Eve Leary earlier today, Singh emphasised the need for road expansion and infrastructural development to accommodate the growing number of vehicles entering Guyana.

He acknowledged that while these projects will disrupt the normal flow of traffic, the diversions have been put in place to help ensure smoother movement.

“You can see new bridges being built, old ones being torn down and replaced, and rehabilitation work being carried out on existing ones to facilitate continuous movement and reduce congestion,” he stated.

Referencing the Railway Embankment on the ECD—where work is currently underway to construct two additional lanes—Singh noted that “consideration must be given to the inevitable delays caused by the increasing number of imported vehicles and the necessity of traffic merging at certain points.”

However, he assured that traffic ranks are actively implementing diversions and prioritising safety to minimise disruptions.
