India has pledged its commitment to providing solar power to a government building in Guyana under a new project, with plans to replicate the initiative across multiple Caribbean countries.
This announcement was made by India’s Union Minister of New and Renewable Energy, Pralhad Joshi, during a discussion with Guyana’s Prime Minister, Brigadier (Ret’d) Mark Phillips, who is currently on a state visit to India.
A post on the Prime Minister’s Facebook page said the two dignitaries also discussed the renewal of the expired Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on New and Renewable Energy, previously signed with Guyana’s Ministry of Public Works.
This discussion is particularly timely, as Guyana is actively working towards cleaner, greener energy under its Low Carbon Development Strategy (LCDS).
On Monday, the country received US$30 million from the World Bank to improve energy efficiency and expand the use of renewable energy in public buildings under the Caribbean Efficient and Green Energy Buildings Project.
Prime Minister Phillips has also met with several other Indian government officials and dignitaries, where he reaffirmed Guyana’s commitment to bilateral relations.
He was joined by Guyana’s High Commissioner to India, Dharamkumar Seeraj. They both acknowledged the success of the Indian Technical and Economic Cooperation (ITEC) programme, which has positively impacted various sectors in Guyana, including the rice industry.
The Prime Minister visited the Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals in New Delhi, where he engaged with the hospital’s team of experts to discuss advances in health care.
He is in India for the 24th edition of the World Sustainable Development Summit (WSDS) 2025. The three-day summit, which opened today, is being hosted by The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI).
