Networking and mentorship are vital tools that enable women entrepreneurs to thrive in today’s fast-paced and interconnected business world, said Vice-Chancellor of the University of Guyana (UG), Professor Paloma Mohamed-Martin.
Professor Mohamed-Martin shared this perspective ahead of International Women’s Day, which will be celebrated tomorrow, and the opening of the HerVenture Summit and Expo, which coincides with the occasion.
She noted that many people mistakenly believe entrepreneurship requires no training, mentorship, or guidance. However, she emphasised that learning from others not only sparks new ideas but also allows individuals to benefit from others’ experiences and mistakes, sometimes accelerating progress in ways they might not have envisioned.
“Listening to others helps us not only ignite our own ideas but also learn from their experiences and mistakes, sometimes allowing us to leapfrog into a future we might not have imagined or reach it faster. I think women should attend because, often, they are so focused on what they need to do that they don’t pay enough attention to how they get things done,” she advised.
Professor Mohamed-Martin also highlighted the value of women sharing experiences and creating spaces for each other, as they often bring unique perspectives shaped by their experiences as women and girls.
She is set to discuss pioneering women and the future of education at the HerVenture Summit and Expo tomorrow at the Theatre Guild, Parade Street, Georgetown. As one of the keynote speakers, she expressed enthusiasm about addressing this significant topic.
Her speech will explore how women can take leadership roles in education, embrace mentorship, and leverage networking opportunities to make the most of emerging possibilities.
“I am very excited to be a part of this venture. I have been asked to speak about women pioneers and the future of education, a topic I am deeply passionate about. Education, especially higher education, is evolving rapidly in today’s world. We need to focus on these changes, engage in discussions, and take action to ensure we seize opportunities rather than get left behind,” she stated.
Professor Mohamed-Martin, a specialist in Strategy, Communications, and Change, has been a leading figure at the University of Guyana for several years.
The HerVenture Summit and Expo provides an opportunity for women in business to learn, grow, and connect with like-minded individuals.
The event is being held under the theme: “Future-Proofing Women Entrepreneurs: Innovation, Finance, and Digital Transformation.”
