General Secretary of the People’s Progressive Party (PPP), Dr Bharrat Jagdeo, has said that smaller opposition parties are not considered a threat in the upcoming General and Regional Elections.

The PPP/C, he affirmed, is the only party capable of solely taking on the APNU and AFC.

Speaking at his weekly press conference at Freedom House on Thursday, the Vice President clarified that he is not “disparaging any of the small parties” but maintained that “only the PPP/C can take on APNU.”

He added that while smaller political parties played a significant role in the last elections, they do not have the capacity to challenge the coalition.

He also noted that “people choose their government based on policies that will benefit them and their children in the long run,” and here is where the PPP/C has a track record that speaks for itself.

When asked about the Mohameds competing in the upcoming elections, Dr Jagdeo said both Nazar “Shell” Mohamed and his son Azraddin are free to enter politics.

He pointed out that the Mohameds have previously thrown their support—primarily financial—behind Guyana’s major political opposition party. He added that they might do so again or could even join forces and compete with the opposition this time around.

Guyana’s General and Regional Elections are most likely to be held in November 2025.
