Home Affairs Minister Robeson Benn has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of firefighter Voshaun Manbodh, who tragically lost his life in the line of duty.

The Ministry of Home Affairs, through the Guyana Fire Service, will provide full support to firefighter Manbodh’s family during this difficult time, the minister said, as he extended condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues.

Minister Benn also said that an investigation will be conducted to determine the cause of the incident that resulted in the loss of life and injuries.

He noted that firefighter Manbodh displayed exceptional bravery and selflessness while battling the devastating fire that engulfed Mae’s Schools in Subryanville last Wednesday.

Having joined the Guyana Fire Service on February 5, 2023, firefighter Manbodh quickly proved himself to be a dedicated and courageous member of the force.

“At just 27 years old, he risked his life to protect others—a testament to his unwavering commitment to public service. Unfortunately, during the operation, he sustained severe injuries when portions of the building’s roof and walls collapsed. He reportedly suffered fractures to his neck, resulting in impaired motor function. He was admitted to the Georgetown Public Hospital, where, regrettably, he succumbed to his injuries,” the minister stated.

He added: “Firefighter Manbodh’s heroic efforts will not be forgotten. He and his colleagues displayed immense courage in the face of grave danger, putting the safety of others above their own. His passing is a great loss to the Guyana Fire Service.”

Chief Fire Officer Gregory Wickham also expressed profound sorrow over Manbodh’s passing.

“His death is not only a tremendous loss to his loved ones but also a tragic day for the Guyana Fire Service and our nation as a whole.

“Firefighter Manbodh served with honor, bravery, and commitment, embodying the true spirit of a firefighter—one who risks everything to protect the lives and safety of others. His courage and selflessness will forever be etched in the history of the Guyana Fire Service, as he was yet another great firefighter who laid down his life in the line of duty. Today, we salute his heroism and acknowledge his invaluable contribution to our service and country.”

In addition to Firefighter Manbodh’s tragic passing, the injuries sustained by other firefighters—Sub-Officer Ian Burnette, Sub-Officer Dwayne Waldron, and Firefighter Jouner Morrison—were also acknowledged. They were successfully treated and subsequently discharged.
