Guyanese from all ten administrative regions, as well as those in the diaspora, are currently benefiting from the government’s one-off $100,000 cash grant distribution.

The grant is increasing the spending power of many, with some choosing to pool their resources into business ventures, while others are using it to make important purchases or pursue personal and socioeconomic goals.

Ignite News spoke to Lindeners to learn their views on the cash grant and how beneficial it has been for them.

For single mother Denisia Liddell, the distribution of the cash grant came at an opportune time—just when she had planned to make a purchase that would greatly enhance her living space and improve comfort for both her and her son.

Liddell explained that she had been considering buying a wardrobe and vanity to better store her son’s clothing for some time, but financial constraints had made it challenging given her other commitments.

“It was helpful for me because I got to fulfil something that I always wanted to. Every day I turn, I can see what I bought with the money. I didn’t want to spend it on food or anything like that—I just wanted to buy something valuable. Since I received the money, I said that’s what I’m going to do with it. The cash grant was very beneficial to me because I had been taking a while to save up my own money to buy it,” she told Ignite News.

Meanwhile, for businessman Wayne Bryan, the grant provided an opportunity to increase his spending power and reinvest in his business while also benefiting from the cash flow increase in Linden, generated by the grant distribution.

“I think it was beneficial. It was a good initiative, considering the inflation we have right now. It brought some spending power into the community and into people’s lives, and it’s better than nothing,” Bryan shared.

Bryan, who is a food vendor and Airbnb owner, added:

“It was indeed helpful to me because we had more sales. We saw an increase in sales from the time the money started being distributed. All the businesses would tell you that they’ve seen an increase. As much as it was, for me, just a stipend—you get a hundred thousand dollars—it means a lot for the community and for business owners in terms of spending power.”

The distribution of the $100,000 cash grant initiative is currently ongoing for Guyanese aged 18 and older.

Thousands of Guyanese have benefitted from the initiative so far.
