President Irfaan Ali has unveiled ambitious plans for Guyana under Vision 2030, aiming to transform the country into a fully digitalised and highly secure economy.
Speaking exclusively to Ignite News, Ali said the government will push ahead with major infrastructure projects, economic diversification, and expanded regional connectivity to improve living standards and drive long-term growth.
The aim, he said, is “to ensure prosperity in every home” and pointed out that this will be achieved through “the creation of new growth areas and poles, continued entrepreneurial support, world-class education and health systems, continued improvement of salaries benefiting the welfare of workers, continued expansion of sugar and rice, investment in agriculture, focus on drainage and irrigation and modern infrastructure, and the completion of the digitisation of the economy.”
Specifically detailing Vision 2030, President Ali stated: “Vision 2030 is one about a Guyana that is highly competitive, one with a well-diversified economy, a highly skilled and highly paid workforce, one in which government systems will be built on a platform of technology, one in which the digitised economy will come into full effect, one in which our people will live a prosperous and fulfilling life here, a life that is filled with happiness, the expansion of our tourism sector, creating a sports economy.”
He further noted that the government would also focus on creating a safer Guyana.
“Ensuring that we continue to invest in security so that we can have not only the lowest crime rates in the economy but one where we can have social infrastructure that is linked to physical infrastructure, which will continue to enhance opportunities for people so that crime… and incentives for people to commit crime will be further removed from our society,” the President said.
He also emphasised that it is not only about plans and projects but also about addressing a key question: “How do we build an economy in which at least three million people will pass through?”
The solution, he said, is simple: “It’s about ensuring that the demand side of services will be taken care of because the type of investment that is being made will require people, so all of this is part of the overall strategy.”
When asked how he feels about being named his party’s presidential candidate for the upcoming elections, Ali said: “I am very humbled to once again be leading the People’s Progressive/Party Civic (PPP/C) into victory on a platform of continuity. We have started major transformative projects that will form part of that continuity of government, moving these projects further into completion.”
Regional and general elections are slated to be held in the latter part of 2025.
