Two missing after boating accident on Corentyne River

Two persons are missing following a boating accident on the Corentyne River, police have reported.
According to a police report, at about 12:00 hrs on Tuesday, 48-year-old fisherman Mohindranauth Parmanand, also known as “Mohin”, of Lot 23 Cotton Tree, Old Road, West Coast Berbice, reported that his son and another man were missing at sea.
Parmanand stated that on Monday, at about 11:00 hrs, he visited Crabwood Creek, Corentyne, Berbice, where he purchased a new engine and boat.
His son, Vishaul Parmanand, 17, and Daniel Inshanali, 32, also known as “Fine Man”, of Lot 27 “D” Edward Village, West Coast Berbice, requested to use the vessel after the engine had been installed.
The two individuals fuelled the boat and departed Crabwood Creek, heading to Rosignol, West Coast Berbice, by sea. However, when the boat failed to arrive by approximately 17:00 hrs on the same day, Parmanand attempted to call his son via mobile phone but received no response.

On the morning of 8 April, at approximately 10:00 hrs, Parmanand received information that the boat was seen drifting at Tain Koker, Corentyne, with the engine still mounted but the two individuals nowhere in sight.
Police were contacted and responded. Searches were conducted along the shoreline, but the missing individuals were not located. Due to the incoming tide, officers were unable to reach the drifting boat, which continued to move away from the shore. Efforts to recover the boat are ongoing.
Parmanand also disclosed that neither of the missing men held a captain’s licence.
Investigations are ongoing.
