More than 9,800 acres of farmland between Canal Number 1 and Canal Number 2 Polders, West Bank of Demerara (WBD), will be serviced through the construction of a Hope-like canal.

President Dr Irfaan Ali spoke about the project today during a community engagement at Canal Number One Polder.

“One of the major projects we have to do here for you in this Polder is the B-line canal… the B-line canal is linked to your future, your sustainability… today, the Expression of Interest was opened to have this project starting before the end of the year.”

The canal is a critical piece of infrastructure for the two agricultural communities. It is designed as a new irrigation method that will service the farmlands within the two villages.

Unlike the current system in place, the new structure will store water during dry periods and, in the rainy seasons, will facilitate the continuous discharge of water on a 24-hour basis.

In Budget 2025, a total of GY$73.2 billion has been allocated specifically for drainage and irrigation systems. This significant investment aims to strengthen the agricultural sector and make it more resilient to climate-related challenges.
