Several pandits participated today in a peaceful demonstration condemning the vulgar and despicable lyrics of a song by Baby Skello directed towards Hindu Goddess Lakshmi.
The demonstration began at 4 pm on Gap Road in La Jalousie, West Coast Demerara, and saw numerous Hindus take to the streets with placards to express their concerns.
The rally aimed to address the recent incident involving Guyanese artist Baby Skello, who released a music video that disrespected one of the principal goddesses in Hinduism, Maha Lakshmi Maa.
On Friday, Skello apologised to the Hindu community and indicated that he had removed the song from his social media platforms.
The song received widespread public condemnation, with many calling for Skello to face legal consequences for his vulgar, blasphemous, and disrespectful lyrics that hurt the sentiments of the Hindu community.
The protest was organised by Pt. Surendranauth Tiwari, Pt. Krishna Patiram, Pt. Vijay Koopchand, and Pt. Avinash Nandalall.
During the procession, participants chanted “Jai Shree Ram,” which means “Glory to the Hindu God Rama,” as they walked through several communities.
Hindus across Guyana have expressed growing concern about “Hindu phobia”, particularly in light of several social media posts that inaccurately portray the religion and cast a negative light on the rituals and practices of Hinduism.
