Linden is being positioned as a hydroponics hub in Guyana, with both government-led initiatives and private investments promoting this modern farming method.
Hydroponics is a technique that uses a water-based nutrient solution to grow plants rather than the traditional method of using soil.
A large hydroponics facility is currently under construction in Linden, serving as both a production centre and a training site, equipping young people with the skills needed for modern agriculture.
This project is part of a broader initiative funded by the Greater Guyana Initiative (GGI), a US$100 million investment from ExxonMobil, Hess, and CNOOC, and is expected to be completed in approximately three weeks.
Under the Greater Guyana Initiative, a similar hydroponics facility is being built in Region Two, while another has been completed in Region Five.
Director General of the Ministry of Agriculture, Ricky Ramraj, told Ignite News that these projects cost US$4.7 million each and consist of a hydroponic farm and two Dutch bucket facilities. These facilities allow for the cultivation of crops such as tomatoes, cucumbers, and bell peppers, which cannot be produced directly through hydroponic technology.
He added that the hydroponics farms in Linden and Region Five are supported by agro-processing facilities already in proximity.
Additionally, the farm in Region Five was strategically built next to the site of the new hospital to supply fresh produce for patient meals.
These projects aim to reduce Guyana’s reliance on food imports by producing a variety of fresh, high-quality produce, including some not native to the region.
In addition to government efforts, Plympton Farms, located along the Linden/Soesdyke Highway, is a large-scale privately owned hydroponics project that utilises modern greenhouse technology and hydroponic systems.
