Parag opens NDC office, stresses importance of field work 

A brand-new $18.3 million building to house the No. 64-74 Neighbourhood Democratic Council (NDC) in Region Six was officially commissioned today by Local Government and Regional Development Minister, Sonia Parag.

Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, Minister Parag emphasised the importance of providing NDC officials with comfortable and adequate working spaces but urged them to remain actively engaged in community outreach.

“You still have to go out there and do your field work,” she insisted a release from her minister quoted her as saying.

The minister highlighted the government’s strengthened support for local democracy and community development, pointing to the substantial increase in annual subventions. NDCs now receive $30 million annually, up from $5 million, while municipalities receive $50 million, up from $18 million.

Additionally, Minister Parag noted that the government is equipping NDCs with essential tools and machinery to better serve their communities. These include excavators, fogging machines, and soon, compactor garbage trucks for every NDC. Firefighting pickups have also been distributed, with staff trained as auxiliary firefighters.

Region Six Chairman, David Armogan, in brief remarks, commended the significant infrastructural advancements in the region over recent years. He underscored the NDC’s critical role in maintaining public assets and fostering continued community growth.

Also in attendance at the event were Regional Vice Chairman Zamal Hussain, Regional Executive Officer Narendra Persaud, Chief Regional Development Officer Deolall Ruplall, and Principal Regional Development Officer Surendra Khayyam. NDC officials, residents, and pupils from nearby primary schools also participated in the ceremony.
