Signalling a new chapter in China-Guyana relations, China’s newly appointed Ambassador to Guyana, Yang Yang, has committed to expanding cooperation between the two nations, especially in areas of sustainable development, climate action, and green energy transformation.

At her first official engagement held in Linden last week, Ambassador Yang underscored the depth of the diplomatic partnership, while outlining China’s vision for continued collaboration aligned with Guyana’s Low Carbon Development Strategy 2030.

“Economic cooperation has grown closer, and cultural exchanges have become increasingly active,” Ambassador Yang stated, adding that Guyana and China are poised to strengthen practical cooperation built on mutual trust and shared development goals.

Having arrived in Guyana on 17 April 2025, Ambassador Yang praised the country’s developmental pace and the warmth of its people, noting that she has already felt encouraged by Guyana’s dynamic progress. “I am truly encouraged by the energy of Guyana’s development efforts and the hospitality extended to me,” she said.

This year, Guyana and China mark 53 years of diplomatic relations, established on 27 June 1972. The two countries have since cultivated a multifaceted partnership, including Guyana’s participation in the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) since 2018. Through this global infrastructure strategy, China has supported Guyana with a range of development projects—from roads and bridges to energy infrastructure.

“China and Guyana are partners in the high-quality joint construction of the Belt and Road Initiative and share the benefits of its fruitful achievements,” the Ambassador noted. “This mutually beneficial cooperation has delivered tangible results for both countries.”

In a strong endorsement of Guyana’s environmental leadership, Ambassador Yang highlighted the importance of sustainable development in tackling global challenges. She emphasised the alignment of China’s green development agenda with Guyana’s LCDS 2030—a national strategy aimed at building a low-carbon economy while preserving the country’s vast forests.

“Today, sustainable development stands as the golden key to addressing global changes,” she stated. “China is advancing its own transformation, and we commend Guyana’s bold ambitions in the same direction.”

The Ambassador also reaffirmed the Embassy’s support for ensuring that Chinese enterprises operating in Guyana uphold high standards of construction quality and timely delivery. She said these standards are essential to ensuring meaningful contributions to Guyana’s socio-economic advancement.

Looking forward, Ambassador Yang expressed confidence in the future of bilateral ties. “We hope to see more cooperative projects that harness our shared strengths for mutual success, adding new momentum to our friendly relations,” she said.
