Guyana’s Independence Marked by Global Congratulations, US Commitment

United States Secretary of State Marco Rubio has extended heartfelt congratulations to the people of Guyana on the country’s 59th Independence Anniversary, reaffirming Washington’s commitment to deepening its partnership with the South American nation.

In a statement issued on Monday, Rubio highlighted the enduring relationship between the US and Guyana, which he said is built on “shared democratic values and a mutual dedication to regional security and prosperity.”

“As Guyana continues to experience historic economic transformation under the leadership of President Dr. Irfaan Ali, we emphasise the importance of transparent governance and the rule of law that benefits all citizens,” Rubio noted.

His remarks come as Guyana’s economy continues to expand rapidly, driven by significant developments in the oil and gas sector. The US Secretary of State underscored his country’s focus on strengthening cooperation with Guyana in key areas such as combating transnational crime, enhancing energy and economic security, and encouraging responsible private sector investment.

“On this important day, we send our sincere wishes for continued peace, democratic progress, and prosperity for all Guyanese people,” Rubio said.

The United States and Guyana have enjoyed long-standing diplomatic relations since the latter gained independence from Britain on May 26, 1966. The US was among the first countries to recognise Guyana’s independence and quickly established its embassy in Georgetown.

Over the years, bilateral relations have been bolstered through security partnerships, investment initiatives, and shared goals aimed at promoting stability and development across the region.

This year’s Independence Day was celebrated with vibrant cultural displays, official ceremonies, and expressions of goodwill from the international community, further highlighting Guyana’s growing global presence.
