People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR) Member of Parliament Geeta Chandan-Edmond today offered an unequivocal endorsement of President Irfaan Ali for a second term in office.
“I fully and unapologetically endorse President Irfaan Ali for a second term,” Chandan-Edmond told the National Assembly during an emotional address. “Under his leadership, we are witnessing real change, investment in people, bold infrastructure, social upliftment, and a renewed sense of national pride.”
Her declaration marks a major political shift for the former PNCR General Secretary, who has faced backlash for speaking in favour of the positive 2025 National Budget measures, presented by the governing People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C).
“Yes, I supported the budget’s positive measures. And I did so with a clear conscience and full conviction,” she said.
Chandan-Edmond also personally apologised and criticised her party’s decision to walk out of a parliamentary motion intended to present a united front against Venezuela’s territorial claims on Guyana.
“We chose politics over patriotism,” she said, adding: “It was not only disappointing, it was also disgraceful. It was, in every sense, a betrayal of our sacred duty.”
The MP said she endured personal and racially charged attacks for supporting Budget 2025, and condemned the silence of her colleagues.
“Not a single one of them stood and condemned it when I was called a slave,” she said. “But let me tell every one of you… I am a product of the sugar plantation. I am a child of Chesney Albion. We just don’t survive. We rise.”
Chandan-Edmond said her support for the PPP/C was not politically motivated.
“This is not about politics, it’s about conscience. And you’ve all witnessed that tonight.”
A former magistrate, Chandan-Edmond said she is prepared for any backlash due to her decision.
“Yes, my back is broad. My chest is strong. And I’m ready to rumble because I believe in a Guyana where leadership shows up—not just for the applause.”
Chandan-Edmond’s endorsement adds to a growing list of political figures, including other PNCR members, who have announced support for the PPP/C ahead of the 1 September General and Regional Elections.
On Sunday, Region Four Vice Chairman and PNCR member Samuel Sandy issued his own endorsement.
“It is imperative that this administration continues its mandate—not only to consolidate these gains but to guide Guyana through this critical period of economic expansion and social transformation. The PPP/C remains the only political movement with the experience, competence, and inclusive vision necessary to unify our diverse society while responsibly managing the opportunities and challenges of our rapidly changing nation,” Sandy said.
Region Four Chairman and fellow PNCR member Daniel Seeram has also thrown his support behind President Ali’s administration, citing discussions on national and regional development.
Other endorsements have come from Liberty and Justice Party (LJP) Leader Lenox Shuman, who said he was impressed by the government’s performance over the past five years. Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly Dr Asha Kissoon of The New Movement and attorney-at-law Selwin Peters have also declared support.
Shazaam Ally, a founding member of The Citizenship Initiative (TCI), has formally joined the PPP/C and announced his endorsement of a second term for the party.
