Omar Nazareth Martinez Rodriguez, 30, a Venezuelan national who resided at 61 Goed Fortuin, West Bank Demerara, was allegedly murdered on Saturday.
According to police, the incident occurred at about 19:40 hrs at the Panda Supermarket, located on the Goed Fortuin Public Road.
Rodriguez, who was a construction worker, was reportedly beaten and stabbed to death by three male suspects of Venezuelan nationality.
“Preliminary investigations revealed that the now dead man was in a taxi heading home, when in the vicinity of the Demerara Harbour Bridge roundabout, the suspects rode up on a motorcycle and two of the suspects came off, opened the car door and began assaulting the man (Rodriguez),” a police release said.
Police noted that the driver of the motorcar managed to drive off with one of the suspects in the car and stopped at Goed Fortuin, where he pulled the suspect off Rodriguez and locked him (now deceased man) in the car.
The driver related that he then went into the Panda Supermarket and, whilst heading back to his car, he saw Rodriguez running towards the supermarket.
According to a 29-year-old security guard who was on duty at the supermarket, he saw the victim running towards the entry of the supermarket, being chased by three identifiable males who then began assaulting the man.
He further related that one of the suspects, who was armed with a knife, stabbed Rodriguez several times about his body. The three suspects then made good their escape.
The body of the deceased, when examined, bore injuries to the right hand, right foot, neck and chest area.
The body is at the Ezekiel Funeral Home, awaiting a post-mortem examination.
Subsequently, acting on information, police ranks apprehended two of the suspects at La Grange.
They remain in custody. Further investigations are ongoing.
