Geeta Chandan-Edmond resigns from PNC

Attorney-at-law and Member of Parliament Geeta Chandan-Edmond has confirmed her resignation from Guyana’s main opposition party, the People’s National Congress (PNC), effective June 11.

The former PNC General Secretary has thrown her support behind President Irfaan Ali and the ruling People’s Progressive Party Civic (PPP/C) for a second term in office.

In a statement today, Chandan-Edmond said she formally tendered her resignation to the PNC’s General Secretary, ending all roles, affiliations, and obligations connected to the party, including her position in the National Assembly.

She said copies of the resignation letter were also sent to former President David Granger, head of the APNU+AFC list, and to Speaker of the National Assembly Manzoor Nadir.

In the statement, Chandan- Edmond said she had written Granger separately, outlining “a detailed explanation of the reasons for her departure” and thanking him “for the opportunity to serve.”

“I stand proudly, boldly, and unapologetically with President Ali,” she said, reaffirming a stance she made public on June 2.

“Under his leadership and under the People’s Progressive Party Civic, we are witnessing real change: investment in people, bold infrastructure, social upliftment and a renewed sense of national pride,” she said.

Chandan-Edmond also denounced efforts to discredit her character, saying she had been targeted with “racist, hateful and bigotry statements” and “character assassination.”

“I am a proud product of Chesney Albion – a sugar plantation area. We don’t just survive, we rise,” she said.

Her resignation comes amid reports that the APNU+AFC coalition had moved to recall her from Parliament over her public endorsement of President Ali.

“May God continue to bless our dear land of Guyana,” she said in closing.
