Mixed results for Guyana’s men in singles regional table tennis championships

At the Caribbean Table Tennis Championships in Barbados, the Guyana men’s team entered the singles competition with hopes of making a significant impact on the regional stage.
Shemar Britton faced a challenging start to his singles campaign, going up against Tyrese Knight from Barbados. Despite the home crowd cheering for Knight, Britton remained undeterred.
However, he lost the match 1-3. In his next outing, Britton found his form against Tykel Pierre from St. Vincent and the Grenadines, delivering a remarkable performance and winning 3-0, showcasing his powerful serves and strategic play.
Meanwhile, Jonathan Van Lange stepped onto the court with high hopes in his first match against Rafael Cabrera of the Dominican Republic.
It was a hard-fought battle, but Van Lange lost 1-3, unable to capitalise on critical moments. However, he bounced back impressively in his next match against Cedric Marquez from Grenada. With newfound focus and determination, Van Lange secured a solid 3-1 victory, demonstrating his ability to adapt and recover from earlier disappointment.
Elishaba Johnson opened the competition on Thursday with a tough match against Jorge Campos from Cuba, losing 1-3. The Cuban player’s speed and precision proved challenging, but Johnson remained resolute, vowing to learn from the experience and improve in future matches.
Johnson’s second match was against Kevin Farley from the host nation, Barbados. This proved to be another difficult challenge, as Farley displayed strong defensive skills and aggressive play. Johnson fought hard but ultimately fell short, losing 0-3.
Lastly, Niran Bissu took his turn in the singles competition. Facing Eduardo Darley of the Dominican Republic, he fought hard but lost the match 1-3. Despite this setback, Bissu regrouped and faced Caleb Howard from St. Vincent and the Grenadines, winning 3-1.
The championships continue with men’s doubles action over the weekend.
