Two men are dead following a tragic accident early this morning on the Belle Vue Public Road, West Coast Berbice.
The victims have been identified as 49-year-old pedestrian Mark George of Lot 2 Belle Vue, and 29-year-old Davin Daniels, the driver of motor car PAD 9544, from Hopetown Village.
The fatal crash occurred around 05:40 hrs and is currently under police investigation.
Initial reports indicate that Daniels was driving east along the northern side of the road at a high speed when he lost control. The vehicle swerved to the southern side, crashed into a greens (vegetable) stand, then slammed into a bus shed where George was seated. The car continued before colliding with a utility pole, which broke and fell, crushing a nearby wash bay shed.
Both men sustained severe head and body injuries. They were pulled from the wreckage by public-spirited citizens and taken to the Fort Wellington Public Hospital, where they were pronounced dead on arrival.
The bodies are currently at Bailey’s Funeral Home, awaiting a post-mortem examination.
