In the men’s singles category at the Caribbean Regional Table Tennis Championships in Bridgetown, Barbados, Jonathan Van Lange had the best performance for Guyana on Sunday. He faced Puerto Rico’s Angel Naranjo in a best-of-seven match but ultimately lost 4-0, with set scores of 11-6, 11-5, 11-8, and 11-9. Earlier in the tournament, Van Lange triumphed in a challenging round-of-32 match against Barbados’ Romario Gill, winning 4-3 after a closely contested battle that went to a decisive seventh set.
Shemar Britton also competed in the round of 32 but lost to the Dominican Republic’s Ramon Vila 4-2. After dropping the first set 11-4, he rallied to win the second 11-9 and the fourth 13-11, but Vila secured the match by taking the remaining sets. Niran Bissu faced Rafael Cabrera from the Dominican Republic and lost his match 4-1.
In the doubles competition, the Guyanese pairs did not advance past the round of 16. Shemar Britton and Jonathan Van Lange initially won the first two sets against Cuba’s Adrian Perez and Diomar Arguelle but faltered in the next three, losing the match. Niran Bissu and Elishaba Johnson also exited in the round of 16, losing in straight sets to Barbados’ Kevin Farley and Tyrese Knights, as well as to St. Vincent and the Grenadines’ Mikael Hazelwood and Tykel Pierre.
