Austin Ramchand, a 24-year-old auto electrician of Lot 304 Mon Repos, East Coast Demerara, and Saffia Mohamed, a 23-year-old housewife of the same address, were on Tuesday charged with the murder of 46-year-old Jenny Mohamed.

The two appeared before Magistrate Sunil Scarce at the Vigilance Magistrate’s Court and were remanded to prison until August 4, 2025. They were not required to plead.

Jenny Mohamed, also known as “Baby”, of Lot 368, Section ‘D’ Non Pareil, East Coast Demerara, was reported missing on June 12. She was last seen on June 10 at around 06:15 hrs by her husband, Rasheed Mohamed.

Initial police checks at the Non Pareil residence on June 13 revealed no signs of disturbance, and interviews with nearby residents yielded no information. However, based on reports from the deceased’s sister that they were in daily contact—last on June 10—and that the deceased had a domestic dispute on the night of June 9, investigators intensified efforts.

On June 16, police re-entered the home and observed suspected bloodstains on the couch, walls, and floor of the hall, as well as in a bedroom and kitchen. Preliminary field tests confirmed the presence of human blood. The home was secured for forensic examination, and the deceased’s husband was taken into custody.

The following day, June 17, police arrested the deceased woman’s daughter, a 25-year-old housewife, and her common-law husband, a 28-year-old auto electrician, both residents of Non Pareil. A forensic team returned to the residence and found additional blood evidence. A handwritten note allegedly from the deceased was also recovered and flagged for its suspicious content.

Investigators collected further evidence, including blood-stained upholstery, swabs, and hair strands from a vehicle linked to the suspects. Interviews with relatives and conflicting accounts from those in custody supported suspicions of foul play.

On June 19, the deceased’s daughter confessed to killing her mother with the assistance of her partner. She described how they stabbed and strangled Jenny Mohamed with a rope before wrapping the body in a garbage bag and tarpaulin and disposing of it in a trench along Eccles New Road, East Bank Demerara. She led investigators to the site, where the decomposed body was recovered with multiple stab wounds and a rope tied around the neck.

The son-in-law later confirmed his involvement during a police confrontation. The investigation, which began as a missing person report, has been upgraded to a homicide case. All suspects remain in custody as legal advice is being sought.
