Six parties sign coalition agreement to govern Suriname

Six political parties in Suriname formally signed a coalition agreement on Wednesday, solidifying their partnership to form the next government following the recent general elections.

The agreement, titled “Together on the Path to a Socially Just and Prosperous Society”, was signed by the National Democratic Party (NDP), National Party of Suriname (NPS), General Liberation and Development Party (ABOP), Pertjajah Luhur (PL), A20, and the Brotherhood and Unity in Politics (BEP).

With all parties now in agreement, the coalition is officially confirmed.

In a joint statement, the parties said the new government would prioritise national progress and pledged to serve in the interest of the Surinamese people. The coalition aims to deliver concrete results during its term, with a focus on building a stable economic foundation. Key priorities include rationalising state expenditure and enhancing state revenue.

“This document is more than a written agreement; it is a promise to the people of Suriname,” the statement said, adding that after 50 years of independence, the country must now determine its own path to development.

The coalition’s first parliamentary session is scheduled for Sunday, during which members will elect a Speaker of the House and a Vice-Chair.
