An unidentified man was fatally stabbed at the Vreed-en-Hoop Stelling, West Coast Demerara on Wednesday evening, police said, as investigations continue into what is being treated as an alleged murder.

The incident occurred around 18:10 hours local time. A 56-year-old security guard at the boat house told investigators he saw the victim, a man of African descent, walk out of the stelling and sit on a bench under a yellow stall, bleeding from both sides of his upper body. The man was placed in a car by bystanders and taken to the West Demerara Regional Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Police said the victim sustained three stab wounds to his upper body. His body was transferred to the Ezekiel Funeral Home pending identification and a post-mortem examination.

Later on Wednesday, a 22-year-old suspect from Wales, West Bank Demerara, was located at the Georgetown Public Hospital with injuries to his upper left arm, side and back. According to police, the suspect claimed the victim had robbed him of passenger fare and attacked him with a knife. He said he wrested the weapon away and stabbed the man.

The suspect was arrested and taken into custody at the Vreed-en-Hoop Police Station. No charges have yet been filed.
Further investigations are ongoing.
