Veteran Caribbean journalist Rickey Singh dies at 89

Veteran Caribbean journalist and political columnist Rickey Singh died on Saturday at his home in Barbados, the Guyana Press Association (GPA) confirmed. He was 89.

Born in Guyana, Singh began his journalism career in 1957 at the Guiana Graphic, quickly establishing himself as a prominent political reporter. Over the decades, he became a widely respected voice on Caribbean politics and social affairs.

Singh’s work appeared in leading regional publications across Guyana, Barbados, Jamaica, and Trinidad and Tobago. He also contributed to the BBC Caribbean Report, the Caribbean News Agency (CANA), and several international outlets in North America and the United Kingdom.

The University of the West Indies awarded Singh an Honorary Doctorate for his contributions to journalism in the region. In 2023, he received a Lifetime Achievement Award in Guyana.

He was also a founding member and the first president of the now-defunct Caribbean Association of Media Workers (CAMWORK).

The GPA extended condolences to Singh’s family, friends, and regional media colleagues.
