A 16-year-old girl was killed in a hit-and-run accident around 21:20 hrs last night on the 22 Bel Air Public Road, West Coast Berbice.
The victim, Kimberley Jones of Lot 63 #22, Bel Air, West Coast Berbice, was struck by a motor car while attempting to cross the road from north to south. She was picked up in an unconscious condition by public-spirited citizens and taken to the Fort Wellington Public Hospital, where she was pronounced dead on arrival.
The vehicle involved, motor car PAF 2130, was owned and driven by 32-year-old Paul Mahabal of Montrose, East Coast Demerara. Police said the car was proceeding west along the southern side of the road when the right front side collided with the teen.
The driver failed to stop after the collision and continued west along the roadway. However, contact was later made with Mahaicony Police Station, where the vehicle was intercepted and the driver arrested. He was taken into custody and the matter transferred to the Fort Wellington Police Station.
Police say the investigation is ongoing.
