Biedroń to lead EU Election Observation Mission to Guyana

Robert Biedroń, Member of the European Parliament, has been appointed Chief Observer of the European Union (EU) Election Observation Mission (EOM) to Guyana for the country’s upcoming General and Regional Elections, scheduled for 1 September 2025.

The mission follows an invitation from the Government of Guyana and was approved by Kaja Kallas, High Representative and Vice President of the European Commission.

In a statement, Biedroń said he was honoured to lead the mission, calling the elections a key opportunity for Guyana to reaffirm its commitment to credible and peaceful democratic processes. He highlighted the importance of upholding democratic principles and human rights, especially during a period of economic transformation.

The EU EOM will deliver a comprehensive, impartial, and independent assessment of the electoral process, based on international and regional standards for democratic elections. The mission will be carried out in multiple phases.

A Core Team of nine election experts is expected to arrive in Guyana on 23 August 2025. Fourteen long-term observers will be deployed across the country in early August, and an additional 20 short-term observers will join closer to election day. Locally recruited observers from diplomatic missions will also contribute to the mission’s national coverage.
