The Guyana Defence Force (GDF) on Thursday officially commissioned its newly acquired Tecnam P2012 STOL (Short Take-Off and Landing) aircraft at the Air Corps Hangar at the Eugene F. Correia International Airport, marking a major boost to the country’s ability to monitor and protect its airspace and provide support to hinterland regions.

The commissioning follows the GDF’s final inspection and acceptance of the aircraft in May at Tecnam’s facility in Italy, where technical experts conducted ground and flight checks.

The acquisition forms part of the GDF’s broader recapitalisation efforts aimed at strengthening the country’s national defence infrastructure, particularly in the air domain.

The Tecnam P2012 STOL is a twin-engine utility aircraft specifically designed for operations on short and unprepared airstrips. It offers enhanced capabilities for accessing remote and challenging terrain, making it a strategic asset for Guyana’s unique geography.

With its capacity to transport personnel, cargo, and medical supplies, the aircraft will play a vital role in emergency response, surveillance, humanitarian support, and logistical missions across the hinterland.

Engineers attached to the Air Corps have already begun training in preparation for full operational deployment, with pilot training to follow shortly. This is according to President Irfaan Ali, who delivered the feature address at Thursday’s commissioning ceremony.

The aircraft will complement the GDF’s existing fleet and is expected to improve response times to remote areas, support border patrols, and facilitate critical outreach during times of national need.

The commissioning took place within the recently upgraded hangar, which was refurbished over the past year to house and maintain modern aircraft as part of the Force’s long-term aviation development plan.

This investment reflects the Government’s commitment to building a responsive and capable Defence Force that is well equipped to meet both traditional security demands and the evolving needs of a rapidly developing country.
