President Dr Irfaan Ali today declared the governing People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) is “ready to race to victory” as he outlined the party’s accomplishments and vision for the future at the launch of its campaign at Kitty Market Square, Georgetown.
Ali told a large crowd of party supporters that the PPP/C has proven itself to be the engine of development in Guyana, citing widespread infrastructure upgrades, job creation, and support for communities across the country.
“This is not a Lamborghini engine,” Ali said, taking a swipe at Azruddin Mohamed, leader of the We Invest in Nationhood (WIN) party. “This is a tried and tested engine… the engine of development, the engine of growth, the engine of progress, the engine of prosperity, the engine of unity,” he said of the PPP/C.
The rally ahead of the September 1 Regional and General Elections, focused on themes of economic progress, social stability, and inclusive development. Ali said the PPP/C had lived up to its commitments, positioning Guyana as a global example of economic resilience and growth.
He pointed to the administration’s performance over the last five years, noting increases in housing, investment in education, employment opportunities, and direct support for rural and hinterland communities.
Among the achievements listed were the allocation of more than 50,000 house lots, expansion of the national job market through revived industries such as sugar, bauxite, and forestry, and the rehiring of thousands of Community Support Officers (CSOs) in Amerindian villages. He said these moves not only created jobs but restored dignity and economic stability to families.
Ali also credited the PPP/C’s management of Guyana’s oil resources as the foundation for the country’s rapid growth. “Oil brings revenue,” he said. “Oil does not bring wealth. Wealth is created by the policies we pursue.”
Guyana is currently the fastest-growing economy in the world, fuelled by offshore oil production and what Ali described as “responsible” and “enlightened” leadership. He stressed that development is not measured only in statistics but in tangible improvements in people’s lives.
“When we give you a new home, we give you the power of building a new family,” he said. “We don’t deal in lies. We deal in pledges, plans, and delivery.”
Ali framed the upcoming election as a clear choice between a government that “builds” and one that “takes away.” He said only the PPP/C had the track record and the plan to lead Guyana into a future of prosperity, stability, and unity.
“No other party could have done it. No other party would have done it. No other party will do it but your party,” he said.
