President Dr Irfaan Ali has announced a “marked reduction in taxes” for Guyana’s productive sector, with a strong focus on agriculture, as part of a sweeping development agenda.

He was at the time addressing more than 25,000 supporters at the People’s Progressive Party Civic (PPP/C) rally in Albion, Berbice.

“Yes, our productive sector, especially agriculture, will see marked reduction in taxes and massive growth in support and subsidy for our farmers.”

Ali also said Berbice would become home to the country’s second oil and gas hub. “You are voting because we will ensure that you have hotels built here that will create jobs, you are voting because the second oil and gas hub will be here in Region Six,” he said.

The president outlined a range of initiatives including the construction of a teaching hospital in New Amsterdam, a national cultural market, a new power plant, and a data centre driven by artificial intelligence.

“You are voting because your region will have the most sophisticated and state-of-the-art technical school in all of the Caribbean and Latin America right here,” he said.

The president also pledged increased support for farmers through expanded access to land, new pasture for livestock, two feed plants, drying and storage facilities, crop insurance, drainage and irrigation systems, and a fertiliser plant.

“We are going to build our own fertiliser plant in Guyana so that you can have accessible, cheap fertiliser,” he said.

He reiterated his administration’s commitment to keeping the sugar and rice industries alive. “You are not only voting because we are going to keep sugar alive and keep those sugar jobs alive, you are voting because we will give our sugar workers more and we want them to be part of the ownership of the industry.”

Ali said by 2030, Region Six would become “the technical trading capital of the entire Caribbean” and urged voters to give the PPP/C a “massive majority.”
