A Corentyne, Berbice family’s dream of moving into their very own home has been shattered — after the house was completely destroyed by fire, just days before they were scheduled to move in.
Thirty-year-old fish vendor Michael Ramnarine of Chesney Squatting Area had been building the home for his wife and three children, after living in his mother-in-law’s house for the past nine years.
The two-storey, three-bedroom structure was almost complete. The family was counting down the days to move in on Saturday.
“Monday night I deh home sleeping. I get a call and reach like 12:45 and when I reach, the whole place was blazing. I want to know who bun down the house. I didn’t see nobody, but I don’t know who burn down the house,” he said.
Ramnarine strongly believes the fire was deliberately set. The house had no electricity and was surrounded by vacant lots. He said there were no nearby structures or wiring that could have sparked a blaze.
The young father built the home block by block with money saved from his fish sales.
