Indian bowlers, led by Mohammed Siraj and Prasidh Krishna, pulled India back from the jaws of defeat on Day 5 of the fifth Test against England at The Oval in London on Monday. India won the match by six runs.
England appeared to be cruising towards victory at 317 for 4 at tea on Day 4, riding on a counter-attacking century from Harry Brook and a brilliant knock by Joe Root. Shortly after reaching his century, Brook was dismissed for 111 by Akash Deep.
Joe Root went on to complete his 39th Test century before falling for 105. Prasidh Krishna and Mohammed Siraj then took charge, removing Root and Jacob Bethell in quick succession. The duo remained relentless after the tea break, dragging India back into the contest.
Bad light halted play late on Day 4, pushing the match into its 25th day. On the final day, Siraj dismissed Jamie Smith and Jamie Overton to reignite India’s hopes.
Mohammed Siraj (5 for 104) and Prasidh Krishna (4 for 126) were the chief destroyers for India. Siraj emerged as the hero with a match haul of nine wickets, including five in the second innings.
After the match-winning performance, Siraj said, “I always believe in myself, that I can pull off a win from any situation.”
With this thrilling win, India levelled the five-match Test series 2–2, with one Test ending in a draw. (The Hindu)
