Guyana secured third place at the recently concluded Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) Boxing Championship in St. Lucia, winning five gold medals.
Ken Harvey led the charge with a unanimous decision victory in the Youth 60–63kg final against St. Lucia’s Kirt Kirton. Rising star Akeelah Vancooten was named Best Female Boxer of the tournament after forcing a Referee Stopped Contest (RSC) against Jada Emmanuel. Ryan Rogers added to the gold medal tally with a dominant RSC win in his Schoolboys 60–63kg final over St. Lucia’s Chris Cooper.
Terron Wintz, honoured as Best Youth Boxer of the Championship, delivered a standout performance by decisively defeating Trinidad and Tobago’s Dornel Philip. Emmanuel Pompey completed the gold haul with a hard-fought points win over Yakita Asaka, showcasing his tactical skill.
Not all boxers got the chance to compete: reigning OECS champion and team captain Abiola Jackman, along with promising boxer Joel Williamson, advanced via walkovers due to opponent no-shows. Nonetheless, Steve Ninvalle, President of the Guyana Boxing Association, expressed pride in the team’s overall performance.
