Driver remanded over accident that killed schoolboy

A 22-year-old labourer from Crabwood Creek has been remanded to prison after being charged with causing death by dangerous driving, failing to render assistance, and failing to stop after an accident, following a fatal hit-and-run on the Crabwood Creek Public Road last week.

The incident occurred on August 5, 2025, at approximately 12:45 pm, and involved motor car PAK 6598, registered to Darshanie Jagdat of Crabwood Creek and driven by Ramsarran Samaroo, a resident of the same community.

The victim, 8-year-old Sahil Naipaul, a student of Crabwood Creek Primary School, was struck while crossing the road near Lot 27 Grant 1802. Police said initial investigations suggest the vehicle was travelling south at a fast rate when the child ran across from west to east, resulting in a collision with the front left side of the car. The driver failed to stop and was later apprehended at Crabwood Creek Access Road.

The unconscious boy was rushed to Skeldon Public Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival. His body remains at the hospital mortuary pending a post-mortem examination.

A breathalyzer test showed no trace of alcohol, but charges were laid under the Motor Vehicle and Road Traffic Act. Samaroo appeared before Magistrate Michelle Mathies at the Whim Magistrate’s Court on Monday. He was remanded to prison until September 4, 2025, when police and prosecutorial reports are due.

The Ministry of Public Security has urged motorists to drive with caution and to stop and assist victims of accidents, warning that failure to do so carries serious legal consequences.
