A pedestrian was killed in the early hours of this morning after being struck by a car on Montrose public road, East Coast Demerara, police said.
The accident occurred around 04:00 hrs and involved motorcar PAC 8964, driven by a 24-year-old welder of Martyrsville, Mon Repos. Police said the pedestrian, who has not yet been identified, was hit while crossing the road and died at the scene.
According to the driver, the pedestrian ran across the roadway into his path. He said he applied brakes but could not avoid the collision. The driver initially left the scene but later returned.
The body was taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital mortuary, where it awaits a post-mortem examination and identification.
Police said a breathalyser test showed no trace of alcohol in the driver’s system. A notice of intended prosecution was served, and the driver remains in custody assisting with investigations.
