A quiet Tuesday on Charlotte Street descended into horror when what police believe to be a murder-suicide claimed the lives of a mother and father, leaving their 10-year-old son fighting for his life.
The deceased have been identified as 36-year-old Teekadai Atiya Rambachan-Solomon, an ExxonMobil employee, and her estranged husband, 36-year-old Alroy Solomon. Investigators say Alroy opened fire on his wife and their son before turning the weapon on himself. The boy survived the attack and is hospitalised at the Georgetown Public Hospital in serious condition.
Video footage viewed by this publication shows Rambachan-Solomon diving for cover as shots rang out, before she attempted to re-enter the home to reach her son. Moments later, the suspect stood over her and discharged several more rounds.
Eyewitnesses recalled hearing a barrage of gunfire. Rambachan-Solomon, who was recovering from a recent hit-and-run accident and nursing a broken arm, collapsed at the front of the property. The child was discovered bleeding at the side of the yard, while the suspect’s body was found at the back with what appeared to be a self-inflicted wound.
Residents in the area described a troubling history of domestic violence and pointed to at least two previous shooting incidents outside the property in recent weeks, allegedly linked to the estranged husband. Friends of the couple also revealed that the family had recently lost their home to a fire, and Rambachan-Solomon had been working to rebuild her life with her son at the rented Charlotte Street residence.
Police are continuing their investigation, while the wider community grapples with the devastating loss and prays for the young boy’s recovery.
