GECOM chair urges peace, rejection of misinformation, intimidation and unrest ahead of elections

Chairperson of the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM), Justice (Ret’d) Claudette Singh on Sunday appealed to all stakeholders to maintain peace and calm ahead of tomorrow’s General and Regional Elections.

Justice Singh in a statement addressed to candidates from all contesting political parties, voters, local and international observers, and members of the media, stressed that elections are a cornerstone of democracy and must be conducted free from intimidation, misinformation, and unrest.

“Every citizen, political party, observer, and media house has a crucial role to play in ensuring the peaceful conduct of these elections,” Singh said. “Our collective commitment to peace is the foundation of a credible and transparent electoral outcome.”

Singh assured that all systems were in place for the efficient administration of the elections, noting that GECOM staff had undertaken extensive simulations and drills to address potential challenges. She highlighted that polling staff are ordinary citizens trained to carry out their duties impartially and urged respect and cooperation toward them.

The GECOM chairperson also reiterated that the commission alone is responsible for tabulating and declaring election results, in accordance with its constitutional mandate. She warned against premature declarations or the dissemination of unverified information, which could undermine public trust and create tension.

“Let us work together to ensure that the September 1 General and Regional Elections reflect Guyana’s democratic maturity and serve as a beacon of peace and stability,” Singh said.
