On the eve of Guyana’s General and Regional Elections, the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) has declared itself “fully prepared” to conduct the polls.
Chief Elections Officer Vishnu Persaud told reporters on Sunday that ballot boxes have been deployed across the 10 administrative regions, staff have been trained, and security arrangements are in place. According to him, 757,690 registered voters are expected to cast their ballots at 2,790 polling stations, overseen by nearly 14,000 polling staff and supported by about 8,700 police officers. Persaud added that safeguards such as party agents, observers, and accredited candidates will ensure transparency.
More than 500 local and 200 international observers are in Guyana, including delegations from the Carter Center and the European Union, which have already begun monitoring activities nationwide. Persaud said this level of oversight should give citizens confidence in the process.
