Polling station relocated from private residence at Peters Hall to Caricom General Insurance

The Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) has relocated a polling station from a private residence in Peters Hall, East Bank Demerara, to the Caricom General Insurance Company, after the property owner indicated he was “no longer interested in his property being used as a polling station.”

In a statement on Sunday, GECOM rejected a Facebook post alleging that staff assigned to the Hibiscus Drive location were “chased out by the proprietor.” “These speculations are blatantly false and does not in anyway reflect the accurate account of the reasons for the movement of the polling station,” GECOM said.

The commission stated that its logistics team immediately sought and finalised an alternative arrangement and urged electors originally assigned to Hibiscus Drive to “take note of the new venue of their polling station.”

GECOM called on stakeholders to be responsible in their reporting and verify information before publishing, especially at such a critical juncture, warning that “misinformation and disinformation are disruptive and can cause unnecessary panic and confusion in an already heightened political environment.”
