Courtney Evans, a 49-year-old businessman from New York, USA, and Coomacka Mines, Linden, was allegedly murdered on Sunday during a brawl at Coomacka Mines Beach.
Police said Evans, who was with his brother and a friend at the time, died at the Linden Hospital Complex while receiving treatment for stab and chop wounds. He sustained injuries to his right lower back, right side head, and left elbow.
Investigations revealed that Evans, his brother, and his friend had been consuming alcohol at the beach when they encountered four men and a woman, all unknown to them. A derogatory remark made by the woman to Evans’ brother, Tyrone Otis Evans, sparked an argument and physical confrontation, which escalated into a fight. The suspects later fled in a white minibus.
Several others were injured in the brawl, including Tyrone Evans, 47, who received a wound to the forehead; Joel Harding, 28, who sustained injuries to his left arm and right elbow; and Evan Herman, 28, who underwent surgery for wounds to the left side of his head.
Police confirmed that the female suspect, a 22-year-old teacher, and one of the men were arrested and are assisting with the investigation, while others remain at large. Evans’ body was taken to G. Jestco Funeral Home, awaiting a post-mortem examination.
