The Guyana Police Force (GPF) has issued a stern reminder to the public that offering bribes to law enforcement officers is a criminal offence that undermines the rule of law, accountability, and the integrity of policing.

Authorities have raised concern over a rising number of incidents in which individuals attempt to influence officers through bribes or “tokens of appreciation” to evade lawful procedures. Such actions not only compromise justice and fairness but also erode public trust in the police.

The Force reiterated its commitment to professionalism, transparency, and a zero-tolerance approach to corruption. Internal mechanisms are in place to identify and investigate officers involved in corrupt practices, with decisive action taken against any found culpable.

The GPF reminded citizens that both those offering and receiving bribes are liable under the law and will face full legal consequences. Members of the public are encouraged to report any instances of bribery or attempted bribery to the Commissioner of Police Secretariat via the hotline numbers: 227-1611 ext. 4001, 225-6411, 225-2700, or 600-3019.

Since recruitment, police officers are trained to serve with integrity, professionalism, and impartiality. Accepting bribes undermines public trust and the foundation of justice. The Force stressed that any officer found soliciting or accepting bribes will be prosecuted, and the same applies to members of the public who attempt to offer inducements.

In support of transparency, the Government of Guyana has mandated the use of body cameras for all law enforcement ranks at ports of entry, a measure aimed at enhancing accountability and safeguarding the rights of travellers.

The Guyana Police Force urges all citizens to uphold the law, maintain personal integrity, and refrain from offering bribes. By working together, the Force said, corruption can be eliminated, paving the way for a society grounded in justice, accountability, and integrity.
