President Dr. Irfaan Ali has assured that the convening of parliament will occur within the constitutional timeframe, with the National Assembly expected to reopen sometime in November.

In an interview on Tuesday morning, the Head of State noted that the Constitution allows four months for the reconvening of parliament following its dissolution. He explained that the parliament was dissolved in July and that there is still sufficient time under the Constitution to reconvene it.

“So if you check from the third of July, I still have a lot of time in the Constitution to reconvene parliament. It will take me some time in November,” President Ali said.

The President emphasized that his government is committed to acting within the law and reassured Guyanese that the administration will operate within the constitutional limits.

“I think that Guyana can trust the People’s Progressive Party/Civic government and you know we will operate within the constitution, and that is what we are doing. What I can assure you is that it will be reconvened within the constitutional limits, that constitutional timeframe,” he added.

The Thirteenth Parliament will see the swearing-in of the stipulated 65 Members of Parliament (MPs). The People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) government will hold 36 seats, marking a significant increase in their representation.

For the first time, the leader of a different political party, We Invest In Nationhood (WIIN), will be sworn in as Opposition Leader after winning 16 seats.

The People’s National Congress (PNC)-led A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) Coalition and the Forward Guyana Movement will make up the minority with 12 seats and one seat, respectively.
