President Ali hosts luncheon for Commonwealth Secretary-General Shirley Botchwey

President Dr. Irfaan Ali hosted a luncheon at State House today in honour of the Secretary-General of the Commonwealth, Ms. Shirley Botchwey, who is visiting Guyana for the first time since her election on 1 April 2025.

During the meeting, Ms. Botchwey expressed her gratitude to President Ali for his support during her election and for his stewardship and leadership on global issues.

President Ali highlighted the alignment between the Government of Guyana and the Commonwealth in addressing critical global challenges. He noted shared priorities such as climate change, biodiversity, and sustainable development, with a particular focus on advancing the rights and welfare of women, children, and persons with disabilities.

As a gesture of goodwill, Ms. Botchwey was presented with a painting titled The Koker, created by local artist Merlene Ellis.

The luncheon was also attended by Senior Minister within the Office of the President with responsibility for Finance, the Honourable Dr. Ashni Singh, along with other government ministers.

The visit provides an opportunity to strengthen collaboration between Guyana and the Commonwealth, reinforcing partnerships on issues of shared global interest.
