The Tourism and Hospitality Association of Guyana (THAG) has praised the recent collaborative meeting between Minister of Local Government and Regional Development, Hon. Priya Manickchand, and Georgetown Mayor, His Worship Alfred Mentore, as a key step in advancing the Georgetown Revival Plan. The initiative seeks to restore the city’s appeal, functionality, and visitor-friendliness.

THAG President Mitra Ramkumar described the meeting as a “progressive and unifying” development, signalling renewed cooperation between central and local government to transform Georgetown into a clean, safe, and welcoming capital.

“This engagement between Minister Manickchand and Mayor Mentore, along with City Councillors, represents the type of partnership necessary to achieve a vibrant and welcoming capital,” Ramkumar said. “As a key stakeholder in the tourism and hospitality sector, THAG fully supports this vision and remains committed to contributing to its realization.”

During the meeting, both Minister Manickchand and Mayor Mentore emphasized the shared responsibility of ensuring that Georgetown reflects national pride and hospitality. Mayor Mentore highlighted the need for unity across political lines:

“We will work for the people regardless of politics. The decision to do that is to be able to bring about cleanliness and provide services to persons,” he said.

Minister Manickchand added that revitalization goes beyond sanitation, noting:

“It’s more than just sanitation. It’s how we welcome people and treat people. It’s how they feel when they come into our city.”

THAG echoed these views, stressing that a revitalized Georgetown would enhance visitor experience, attract tourism investment, and elevate the city’s image as the gateway to Guyana’s tourism offerings.

Ramkumar reiterated that the private sector is ready to partner with government and City Hall in implementing practical initiatives to support urban renewal and civic pride.

“We look forward to continued dialogue, strategic action, and meaningful partnerships as we work collectively toward a renewed Georgetown — one that all citizens and visitors can take pride in,” he said.

The Georgetown Revival Plan forms part of the Government’s broader national beautification and infrastructure agenda, aimed at modernizing the capital while fostering civic responsibility, tourism growth, and a stronger sense of national identity.
